Oil Palm Cultivation Approved in Assam’s Tea Estates Under NMEO-OP Scheme

The Centre has approved oil palm cultivation in 5% of Assam’s tea estate land under the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP). This follows the Union Agriculture Ministry’s nod to extend scheme benefits, including financial aid per 143 trees per hectare. The North Eastern Tea Association had requested the inclusion, citing economic challenges and compatibility of oil palm with tea. Assam’s prior notifications and Cabinet approval had allowed such land use. The move aims to reduce edible oil imports and support the tea industry.
