Only Three Persons Granted Citizenship Under CAA in Assam So Far

Assam has seen minimal impact from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, with only three people receiving citizenship so far, officials said. Around 40 applications were submitted, though many are duplicates.
Under the CAA, non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who arrived before December 31, 2014 can apply. But officials said most Bangladeshi-origin migrants lack entry-date proof and are unwilling to identify themselves as foreigners, especially after applying for NRC as Indian citizens.
Applications undergo scrutiny by district and state committees, followed by IB verification. Officials noted that many long-term illegal migrants have acquired documents and are unlikely to apply under the CAA.
