PETA Challenges Assam Government’s Approval of Buffalo and Bulbul Fights, Citing Cruelty and Violations
Following the Assam government’s decision to permit buffalo and bulbul bird fights during Magh Bihu celebrations, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has filed petitions with the Gauhati High Court, seeking a ban on these traditional spectator sports. PETA’s submissions in court highlighted numerous violations of central laws, including instances of severe animal cruelty during these events. The organization emphasized that such fights contradict Indian cultural values of ahimsa (non-violence) and compassion. The case is set for further consideration on February 1, 2024.
