Police Station IC Suspended Following Detainee’s Mysterious Death in Assam

In response to the mysterious death of detainee Arsabh Ali under police custody, Dipankar Changmai, the in-charge (IC) of Khelmati Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, has been suspended. Assam DGP GP Singh announced on Thursday that Changmai and an on-duty sentry have been suspended. An independent inquiry has been ordered by the Additional SP of Biswanath.

The DGP’s official statement on social media outlined the actions taken, including adherence to legal provisions and directives from NHRC/AHRC, and directing the DIG NR to proceed to Khelmati. The detainee, accused of mobile theft, reportedly fell ill and died at the police station, sparking widespread outrage and tensions in Lakhimpur.
