Political Clash in Assam After Women’s Reservation Bill Defeat

A day after the Women’s Reservation Bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha, a sharp political confrontation erupted in Assam between Congress and BJP leaders.

APCC chief Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP of using the Bill to advance political control through delimitation rather than genuine women’s empowerment. He alleged attempts to centralise constitutional powers and alter the political balance among states.

Congress leader Ripun Bora also criticised the BJP, questioning its commitment to women’s representation and calling its approach “selective empowerment.”

In response, Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia blamed Congress and other opposition parties for blocking the Bill. He termed its defeat a “black day” and accused the Opposition of acting against women’s empowerment.
