Protests Erupt in Upper Assam Over Suspension of Historic Dibru-Sadiya Train Service

Strong resentment has spread across Upper Assam after the suspension of passenger train services on the historic Dibru-Sadiya railway route. Student bodies, passengers’ associations and local residents have warned of protests if the service is not restored immediately.

The Northeast Frontier Railway reportedly discontinued the Dibrugarh-Dangari DEMU train service from May 1, triggering criticism from several organisations. Groups including All Assam Students’ Union have accused railway authorities of neglecting the Northeast’s oldest railway corridor and demanded immediate restoration of services.

Local organisations have also demanded extension of the railway line towards Saikhowaghat and improved rail connectivity in Upper Assam.
