Purnima Devi Barman Named Among The Times’ Women of the Year

Assam’s biologist and wildlife conservationist, Purnima Devi Barman, has been honored as one of The Times’ Women of the Year, alongside global icons like Nicole Kidman. Barman earned recognition for her work in conserving the greater adjutant stork (Hargila), boosting its population in Assam from 450 to over 1,800. She founded the “Hargila Army,” a group of over 20,000 women dedicated to conservation and community empowerment through traditional crafts. Barman’s model has gained international acclaim, promoting biodiversity education globally.
