Santals Hold Massive Cultural Protest in Jorhat, Demand ST Status and Safeguards

Thousands from the Santal community held a large cultural protest in Jorhat on Friday, demanding ST status and other constitutional safeguards. The rally, marked by traditional music and slogans, marched from Jorhat Stadium to the District Commissioner’s office, where a memorandum for the Chief Minister was submitted.
Their demands include ST status under Article 342, land rights, quick issuance of caste certificates, Santal language teachers in schools, and implementation of the 2022 Tripartite Tribal Peace Agreement.
Leaders warned the BJP-led government of a possible boycott in the 2026 elections if their demands remain unmet, stressing that the agitation is peaceful but aimed at securing dignity and recognition.
