Sarbananda Sonowal Launches Jalvahak Scheme to Boost Waterway Cargo
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled the Jalvahak scheme to promote long-haul cargo movement through National Waterways 1, 2, and 16. The initiative incentivizes cargo transport over 300 km, aiming to reduce road and rail congestion while promoting eco-friendly and cost-effective shipping.
At the launch, Sonowal highlighted the scheme’s role in advancing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of sustainable infrastructure. The event also marked the flagging off of three cargo vessels — MV AAI, MV Homi Bhaba, and MV Trishul — initiating Fixed Scheduled Services on Kolkata-Patna-Varanasi and Kolkata-Guwahati routes.
The scheme is expected to enhance inland cargo transport and strengthen India’s waterway network.
