SC Stays Criminal Defamation Case Against Rahul Gandhi

The Supreme Court temporarily stayed criminal defamation proceedings against Rahul Gandhi over remarks allegedly calling Amit Shah a “murderer” during a 2019 rally in Jharkhand. BJP worker Navin Jha had filed the complaint, leading to a summons under Section 500 of the IPC. Gandhi’s appeal against the Jharkhand High Court’s rejection of his plea was considered by the apex court. The stay grants Gandhi four weeks of reprieve as responses are sought from Jha and the Jharkhand government.
