SC Verdict Clears Way for Faster Forest Land Evictions in Assam: CM

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday termed the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding Assam’s authority to evict encroachments from forest land a landmark decision. He said the judgment will streamline eviction drives by reducing legal delays.

As per the ruling, a district-level committee will verify land status and hear objections before issuing eviction notices. If land is confirmed as forest land, eviction can take place within 15 days. Sarma said the verdict will help protect forest areas like Kaziranga and Manas, while forest rights of indigenous communities will continue to be granted as per law.
