Silchar to Roll Out Citywide CCTV Network, Plan Biogas Plant by 2026

Silchar will introduce a city-wide CCTV surveillance system and plans to set up a compost-based biogas (CBG) plant by 2026 to strengthen civic governance and waste management. According to SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh, CCTV cameras will be installed at 77 key locations to curb illegal dumping, traffic violations and encroachments through round-the-clock monitoring.

The city generates nearly 100 tonnes of waste daily. While door-to-door collection has improved and about half of the legacy waste has been cleared, a proposed CBG plant by Oil India is expected to reduce landfill pressure by converting organic waste into clean energy. Authorities are also strengthening waste segregation, recycling systems and public enforcement, stressing that citizen cooperation remains crucial for the success of these initiatives.
