Spending billions of rupees hasn’t made Guwahati City any less dirty in the nation
Guwahati’s ranks in the Swachh Survekshan are still declining, in line with prior years’ patterns. From 312 in 2021, the number dropped to 342 in 2022 and 402 out of 446 in the Swachh Survekshan in 2023. Citizens are now questioning why the city keeps falling on the list, even after spending billions of rupees on different improvements under the Guwahati Smart City (GSC) project, given that it is ranked in the bottom fifty of the list.
Every year, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs organises this event to identify the nation’s cleanest towns and cities. This year, 446 local urban bodies—that is, cities and towns with a population of one lakh or more – participated in the major category.
