Supreme Court Refuses Interim Suspension of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to pass an ex-parte interim order seeking the suspension of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of unilateral decisions during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued notices to the Centre, Election Commission and other officials, saying they must first respond to the allegations.

The petitioners alleged that 14 SIR-related decisions were taken without the approval of the other two Election Commissioners. The court said it would examine the official records and could annul decisions found to be contrary to law. It also clarified that the Supreme Court had not approved any modification to Form 6 used for voter enrolment.
