Supreme Court to Hear Pleas Against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 16

The Supreme Court is set to hear on February 16 petitions seeking action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a viral video allegedly showing him firing a rifle at members of a particular community. The matter is likely to be heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant.
The court had earlier agreed to consider pleas filed by CPI and CPI(M) leaders seeking FIRs against Sarma and a court-monitored SIT probe, citing concerns of communal polarisation. The video, shared and later deleted by the Assam BJP, triggered political outrage and allegations of incitement to violence.
Separate petitions have also urged the court to restrain constitutional authorities from making divisive remarks, especially in the run-up to Assembly elections.
