U.S. Citizens Detained in Assam for Alleged Violation of Tourist Visa Norms

Two U.S. citizens, John Matthew Boone (64) and Michael James Flinchum (77), were detained in Tezpur, Assam, for reportedly violating tourist visa regulations by engaging in preaching Christianity. The duo was accused of attending public meetings related to religious activities. Each faced a US$500 penalty for breaching visa conditions. The Additional Superintendent of Police in Sonitpur informed that a General Diary case was recorded against them, highlighting the restrictions on participating in religious events while on tourist visas. The individuals were allowed to leave after paying the imposed penalties.
