Undertrials Form Nearly 70% of Assam Jail Inmates

Undertrial prisoners continue to outnumber convicts in Assam jails, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

As of December 31, 2024, Assam had 11,674 inmates, of which 8,144 were undertrials, making up 69.8% of the prison population. Convicts accounted for 3,500 inmates or 30%, while the remaining were detenues and others.
