Union Cabinet Approves Brahmaputra Underwater Road-Rail Tunnel Between Gohpur and Numaligarh

The Union Cabinet has approved a 4-lane access-controlled greenfield corridor from Gohpur to Numaligarh in Assam, including a 15.79-km road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra River. The Rs 18,662-crore project will be built under EPC mode.

The corridor will reduce the current 240-km, six-hour journey to just 34 km, cutting travel time to around 20 minutes. The tunnel will be India’s first underwater road-rail tunnel and the second of its kind in the world.

Leaders said the project will boost connectivity under the Act East Policy, improve logistics, create jobs, and accelerate economic growth across Assam and the Northeast.
