United Opposition in Assam Strongly Opposes Expedited Implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act
Amidst speculation of the Centre fast-tracking the framing of Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) rules ahead of Lok Sabha elections, a united front of 16 political parties, known as the United Opposition Forum in Assam, including the Congress, vehemently opposed the Act’s implementation in the state. The opposition parties, led by Assam unit Congress president Bhupen Borah, presented a memorandum to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, expressing concerns about the potential threat the CAA poses to Assam’s rich history and culture. The forum plans to forward the memorandum to the President and aims to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convey their objections to the Act’s implementation in Assam.
