Violence Erupts in Bangladesh After Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation

At least 29 Awami League leaders and their family members were found dead amid violence in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India. Protests over a controversial quota system led to her resignation. In Satkhira, 10 people were killed, and homes and businesses of Awami League members were vandalized. In Cumilla, mobs killed 11 people, including five teenagers in a house fire. In Dhaka, parts of the Awami League’s office were set on fire and looted. Bangladesh’s army commander announced the formation of an interim government and urged an end to the violence. Since the riots began, at least 350 people have died and 10,000 have been arrested.
