Wild Water Buffaloes Shifted from Kaziranga to Kanha in Historic Conservation Move

In a major wildlife conservation initiative, four wild water buffaloes were translocated from Kaziranga National Park to Kanha Tiger Reserve, marking the longest-distance relocation of the species in India.
The project aims to reintroduce 50 buffaloes in Madhya Pradesh, where the species became locally extinct nearly 100 years ago. The first batch, comprising three females and one male, was released at Supkhar in Balaghat district.
Mohan Yadav praised Assam’s role in the project, while officials said the initiative highlights interstate cooperation in wildlife conservation. The buffaloes were brought from healthy populations in Kaziranga under expert supervision and released into a controlled enclosure for gradual adaptation.
