Youth Drowns in Bhogdoi River, Raising Concerns Over Sand Mining Pits in Jorhat

A tragic incident occurred in Bhaskar Nagar, Jorhat, on Thursday when 23-year-old Gauranga Bhuyan drowned in the Bhogdoi River while bathing with friends. Local residents are alarmed, attributing the tragedy to deep pits left by sand miners, which have turned parts of the river into dangerous traps. Bhuyan’s drowning follows similar incidents, highlighting the community’s growing concerns. Witnesses reported that Bhuyan accidentally ventured into one of these deep sections and, despite rescue attempts by friends and nearby residents, he could not be saved.
