Chief Minister Sarma Assesses Flood Impact in Kaziranga, Implements Measures to Protect Wildlife
Kaziranga, July 4, 2024 – Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Kaziranga on Tuesday night to evaluate the flood situation affecting the region. Visiting the Bagri forest area, he reported that over 160 forest camps had been impacted by the first flood of the year, with water levels rising since Monday night. Despite several camps being inundated, only a few had to be abandoned, while the rest are under close monitoring by forest officials.
To protect wildlife, vehicle movement restrictions have been imposed. Unfortunately, a rhino calf and two deer have died due to the floods. The NDRF, mobile veterinary clinics, and the health department have been deployed to manage the situation. Sarma expressed hope that as water levels have receded in neighboring areas, the situation in Kaziranga will improve in the coming days. Traffic advisories have been issued to ensure the safety of animals seeking shelter outside the park.
