Assam Explores New Model to Ease Human-Elephant Conflict in Goalpara

Human-elephant conflict has intensified in Goalpara as shrinking forests push herds into villages, causing crop loss and deaths. Despite solar fencing, youth patrols, and alert systems, blocked corridors still force elephants into human areas. A proposed pilot at the Agia Elephant Underpass aims to guide elephants safely using natural cues, food incentives, and vegetation to make the structure feel like a forest path. Experts and local groups say community awareness and corridor restoration are key. If successful, this model could be replicated across Assam to promote peaceful coexistence.
