Assam Cabinet Clears ₹478.78 Crore for Judicial Township in North Guwahati

The Assam Cabinet has approved ₹478.78 crore for the first phase of a modern judicial township at Rangmahal, North Guwahati. Spread over 100 bighas, the project will be built in three phases by the PWD and serve as the region’s apex judicial hub. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the complex will feature a new High Court, Bar building, and offices, with the foundation likely to be laid by Chief Justice of India-designate Justice Surya Kant in January 2026.

The township will house 31 judges and include a six-storey advocates’ block, connected by bridges and linked through two major roads, including a new four-lane route over the Brahmaputra. The government also plans to convert the existing Gauhati High Court premises into a judicial museum and arbitration centre.

In the same meeting, the Cabinet approved the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, proposing up to seven years’ imprisonment for offenders. The law excludes Scheduled Tribes and Sixth Schedule areas and will not apply retrospectively.
