Middle East Tensions Raise Concerns for Assam Orthodox Tea Exports

The Indian tea industry is closely monitoring the Iran–Middle East conflict amid fears of a prolonged disruption affecting exports, especially Assam orthodox tea, nearly 50 per cent of which is consumed by Iran. Airspace closures and internet shutdowns have disrupted communication, raising concerns over shipments, payments and contracts.

Exporters warn that continued instability could lead to excess supply and a drop in tea prices in India, particularly for premium orthodox varieties. While the Middle East remains a key market and India recorded record tea exports in 2025, industry leaders say it is too early to assess the full impact and are adopting a wait-and-watch approach.
