Railways Sanction AI System to Detect Elephants on NFR Tracks

The Ministry of Railways has approved an additional 403.42 route kilometres of AI-enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) on Northeast Frontier Railway tracks to detect elephant movement and prevent train collisions. The system, already operational over 141 km, uses sensors along optical fibre cables to identify elephant locomotion and send real-time alerts to railway staff. The initiative aims to reduce train-elephant accidents, which average about 16 incidents annually across the region.
