Assam Plans New Policy to Protect Brahmaputra River Islands

The Assam government has drafted a new policy to protect the Brahmaputra’s river islands and chars from unchecked settlements, erosion, deforestation, and ecological damage. The initiative, prepared by the Brahmaputra Board and INTACH, aims to create a science-based framework for sustainable management of these fragile landscapes.
Assam has 971 mapped river islands supporting around 2.7 million people. The draft proposes strict land-use regulations, a freeze on settlement expansion, organic farming, a ban on sand mining and deforestation, and promotion of low-impact eco-tourism.
The policy also seeks to clarify land ownership and preserve the rural and ecological character of the islands. Special focus has been given to Majuli, where built-up areas may be limited to just 0.5 per cent under a proposed master plan.
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota said the main goal is to preserve the river ecosystem and reduce environmental risks caused by uncontrolled development.
