Guwahati Among First Cities for Water Metro Launch

Guwahati has been shortlisted in the first phase of the Centre’s nationwide Water Metro project aimed at improving urban water transport. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the Brahmaputra-based project will help reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and boost tourism through eco-friendly transport.
The Centre has also proposed Tezpur and Dibrugarh for the second phase of the project. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the move, saying it would strengthen Assam’s urban transport infrastructure.
The proposed Water Metro system will use electric and hybrid ferries with minimal infrastructure, making it a cost-effective and green alternative for public transport. Besides Guwahati, 17 other Indian cities have been identified for the Phase I rollout.
