Opposition Grows Against Proposed UltraTech Cement Plant in Chhaygaon

Opposition to the proposed UltraTech Cement plant at Choudhurikhat in Assam’s Chhaygaon area intensified on Sunday as the Land Protection Committee reiterated its strong stand against the project.
At a press conference, committee members and local residents said they would not allow the cement factory to be set up, alleging that it would damage fertile agricultural land, harm the environment and affect the livelihoods of indigenous communities.
The protest movement against the project has been continuing for nearly two years, with several local organisations joining the agitation. Meanwhile, Chhaygaon Revenue Circle Officer Nithee Kalita denied allegations made by the committee and termed them baseless.
