Kaziranga Closes for Monsoon After Record Tourist Season

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve officially closed its gates to tourists from May 29, marking the end of a successful tourism season ahead of the monsoon period. Authorities announced that the final jeep safari concluded on May 28 as heavy rainfall and flooding begin to make large parts of the park inaccessible.

According to officials, Kaziranga recorded more than 4.7 lakh visitors this season, including a notable rise in foreign tourists. Improved wildlife sightings, active tourism promotion, and growing global interest contributed to the surge in footfall at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The season was especially memorable for rare wildlife sightings. Tourists spotted gharials for the first time in the Burapahar range, while sightings of the rare golden tiger in the Kohora and Bagori ranges also generated excitement among wildlife enthusiasts. Frequent rhino sightings further boosted visitor interest across different safari zones.

Park authorities said the annual monsoon closure is necessary to ensure visitor safety, allow free movement of wildlife during floods, and carry out road repairs and habitat management work before the park reopens later in the year.
