IIT Guwahati Develops Advanced Nanomaterial to Combat Counterfeiting

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati have developed a new light-emitting perovskite nanomaterial that could strengthen protection against counterfeit currency, forged documents, and fake products.

Led by Saikat Bhaumik and PK Giri, the team created highly durable nanocrystals capable of generating unique light-based security patterns that are extremely difficult to copy.

The technology uses special coatings and laser-written micro-patterns that can react differently to heat and chemicals, making authentication more secure than conventional holograms, barcodes, or watermarks. The research was published in the journal Advanced Optical Materials.
