Heated Exchange in Assam Assembly Over FIR Registration

Guwahati: The opening day of the Assam Legislative Assembly’s Budget Session witnessed a heated exchange between MLA Akhil Gogoi and Minister Pijush Hazarika over the registration of FIRs by Assam Police.

Gogoi alleged that the government was underreporting FIRs to keep crime figures low, while Hazarika rejected the claim and said police follow provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) before registering cases. The minister also stated that 32 cases are registered against Gogoi, prompting a sharp response. The Speaker later intervened and ordered some of Gogoi’s remarks to be removed from the Assembly records.
