Gauhati High Court Seeks Details on Rejected Remission Pleas

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has directed the governments of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram to submit details of convicts whose remission applications were rejected, along with the reasons for such decisions. The court also asked the states to confirm that rejected applicants were informed of the decisions and their right to challenge them.

The direction was issued by a division bench comprising Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Anjan Moni Kalita, with the four states asked to file affidavits by December 1, 2026. The court specifically noted that Assam’s State Level Review Board had considered nine life-convict cases in July, recommending two for release, and stressed that rejection orders must contain reasons and be communicated to the concerned convicts.
