Maha Navami: Himanta Biswa Sarma Highlights Assam’s ‘Lakhpati Baideu’ Mission

Assam, October 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday highlighted the state government’s efforts to promote women’s entrepreneurship, linking the message of Maha Navami and the worship of Maa Siddhidatri with the growing economic independence of women through the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan.
In a post on X, Sarma offered prayers to Maa Siddhidatri, revered as the goddess who bestows spiritual accomplishments and success. He said the government’s initiative was helping women across Assam turn their efforts into sustainable business ventures and improve their livelihoods.
Under the scheme, every eligible woman member of a self-help group (SHG) receives ₹10,000 as seed capital in the first year to support entrepreneurial activities. According to the Chief Minister, beneficiaries who use the initial assistance effectively can access ₹25,000 in the second year, comprising ₹12,500 from the state government and ₹12,500 through a bank loan. Assistance of ₹50,000 is envisaged in the third year, subject to the applicable conditions.
The government’s stated objective is to help women become “Lakhpati Baideus” — women earning at least ₹1 lakh annually. Sarma noted that beneficiaries had already established income-generating ventures in sectors such as baking, food processing, fish farming and vegetable cultivation.
He also emphasised the wider social impact of women-led enterprises, saying successful entrepreneurs were creating livelihood opportunities and inspiring others in their villages. The initiative, he said, reflects the role of hard work, confidence and self-reliance in strengthening rural communities.
Concluding his Maha Navami message, Sarma prayed for Maa Siddhidatri’s blessings for women across Assam, expressing hope that they would continue to achieve success in their personal and entrepreneurial pursuits.
