Assam Medical College Gets Dedicated Dermatosurgery Operation Theatre in Dibrugarh
New facility aims to strengthen specialised skin treatment services and provide hands-on surgical training for postgraduate medical students.
Dibrugarh, November 3, 2026: Specialised dermatology services at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh have received a significant infrastructure boost with the inauguration of a dedicated Dermatosurgery Operation Theatre at the institution’s Department of Dermatology.
The new facility is expected to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised skin treatments while creating additional opportunities for postgraduate medical students to gain practical experience in dermatological procedures.
Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal highlighted the development in a social media post on Monday, November 2, describing it as another step towards improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to specialised medical services in the state.
Strengthening Specialised Dermatology Services
The dedicated operation theatre represents an important addition to the Department of Dermatology at one of Northeast India’s oldest medical colleges.
Dermatosurgery is a specialised field of dermatology involving surgical procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of various skin conditions. Such procedures may include the removal of skin lesions, biopsies and other medically indicated interventions.
With the establishment of a dedicated facility, the department is expected to have greater scope for conducting specialised procedures in a more focused clinical environment.
The development could also benefit patients seeking dermatological care in Dibrugarh and surrounding areas of Upper Assam, although the hospital has not yet publicly detailed the specific procedures that will be offered through the new theatre.
Greater Training Opportunities for Postgraduate Students
Beyond patient care, the facility is expected to enhance practical medical education at Assam Medical College.
Postgraduate students specialising in dermatology require supervised clinical experience to develop surgical skills and improve their understanding of patient management.
According to Singhal, the dedicated operation theatre will create opportunities for students to receive hands-on training, strengthen their technical abilities and gain valuable exposure to specialised dermatological procedures.
The initiative is expected to support both medical education and the development of specialist healthcare services at the institution.
Ashok Singhal Appreciates Medical College Team
Acknowledging the efforts behind the development, Singhal commended Professor Dr. Shyamanta Barua, Head of the Department of Dermatology, and Professor Dr. Sanjeeb Kakati, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of Assam Medical College and Hospital.
The minister also appreciated the contributions of faculty members and other personnel who helped make the facility possible.
Referring to the state government’s vision of building a healthier society, Singhal reiterated the importance of continuously strengthening medical infrastructure under the aspiration of “Swasthyawan Samaj, Swasthyawan Assam.”
Another Addition to Assam’s Healthcare Infrastructure
Established on November 3, 1947, Assam Medical College has played a significant role in medical education and healthcare delivery across Northeast India.
The institution continues to serve as an important centre for clinical services and professional medical training.
The newly inaugurated Dermatosurgery Operation Theatre adds to its specialised clinical infrastructure and is expected to contribute to improvements in dermatological care and postgraduate training.
The development reflects the continuing emphasis on strengthening healthcare facilities at government medical institutions, with specialised infrastructure supporting both patient services and the education of future medical professionals.
