Debabrata Saikia Calls Upper Assam Floods ‘Man-Made Disaster’, Demands Judicial Inquiry

Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has accused the Assam government of negligence and alleged that illegal riverbed mining contributed to the devastating July floods in Upper Assam. Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, he demanded an independent judicial inquiry and a permanent halt to illegal mining along the Dikhow River.

Saikia also demanded compensation of at least ₹10 lakh for each flood-affected family, alleging irregularities in relief distribution. He said a PIL had been filed in the Gauhati High Court seeking justice and rehabilitation for victims. The next hearing is scheduled for December 14.
