AASU Protests Power Cuts and Tariff Hikes, Burns Effigy of Assam Power Minister

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) protested against prolonged power cuts and tariff hikes, burning effigies of State Power Minister Nandita Garlosa in various parts of Udalguri district on Thursday. Demonstrations occurred in Rowta, Tangla, Kalaigaon, and Udalguri, expressing frustration over frequent outages and high electricity tariffs by APDCL.

Madhurjya Sarma, AASU Udalguri chapter general secretary, criticized the government and power minister for failing to meet public needs, highlighting severe disruptions caused by irregular power cuts. Local police intervened to manage the protests. Dipjyoti Nath, an AASU state executive member, emphasized that the focus should be on ensuring a stable electricity supply rather than increasing tariffs. AASU warned of stronger actions if the power supply issues are not resolved soon.
