Acquittal in Chirang Schoolgirl Murder Case Sparks Concerns

Five individuals accused of murdering a schoolgirl in Assam’s Chirang district have been acquitted by the District Judicial Court. The victim, allegedly killed by NDFB(S) members in 2014, was suspected of being a police informant. Four other accused await judgment.

Initially investigated by Chirang Police, the case was later taken up by the CID. The trial concluded on Tuesday with the acquittals. The incident, involving NDFB(S) leader G Bidai, drew attention in 2014 when armed cadres shot the student.

Questions arise over the fate of former NDFB(S) members, especially with the BTR agreement. The Assam government had awarded Rs 20 lakh to the victim’s family.
