Assam CM Lays Foundation for Zoo Project, Inaugurates Key Developments

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a ₹362.04 crore modernization project for the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden. The project aims to enhance facilities for animals and visitors, making it a state-of-the-art conservation hub.

The CM announced plans for open zoos in Dibrugarh and Silchar, with budgets of ₹259 crore and ₹214 crore, respectively. Additionally, an Institute of Wildlife and Health for wild animals will be established in Chabua.

Sarma highlighted efforts to curb poaching, recover encroached forest land, and increase wildlife populations. A report revealed Assam’s elephant population stands at 5,828, reflecting conservation success.

The CM also inaugurated a ₹16.66 crore footbridge at Paltan Bazar to ease pedestrian movement and a renovated memorial for Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi, enhancing its historic significance with a ₹1.26 crore investment.
