Assam Extends ‘Disturbed Area’ Status: Militant Concerns Prompt Government Action

The Government of Assam has extended the declaration of “Disturbed Area” status for four districts in response to ongoing concerns regarding militant activity. Initiated under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, the extension affects Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, and Charaideo districts. Originally declared in September 2023, the status was set to expire on March 31, 2024. However, based on recommendations from Assam Police Headquarters and proposals to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the extension was approved. The Ministry of Home Affairs communicated the decision to maintain the “status-quo” for an additional six months, effective from April 1, 2024. This official declaration underscores the government’s commitment to address security concerns in these regions.
