Assam Government Advances Uniform Civil Code by Repealing Muslim Marriage Act, Introduces Indigenous Languages in Schools
The Assam government takes a significant step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by repealing the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935. Cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced this decision after the weekly cabinet meeting in Guwahati, stating that Muslim marriages and divorces would now be governed by the Special Marriages Act, with custody handed over to District Commissioners or District Registrars. The government also approved the introduction of Mising, Rabha, Tiwa, Karbi, Dimasa, and Deori languages as mediums of instruction at the foundational level of primary schools, emphasizing the importance of preserving indigenous languages. Furthermore, the Ahom, Koch Rajbongshi, and Gorkha communities under the Balipara Tribal Belt were declared as protected classes, while Manipuri was designated as the Associate official language for specific districts. Additionally, the establishment of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University by bifurcating the Assam Agriculture University was approved as another significant decision.
