Assam Police Face Legal Action Over Alleged Fake Encounter

The Assam Police are embroiled in a legal controversy after FIRs were lodged at Sadia Police Station, accusing former Sadiya SP Mrinal Deka and his team of staging a fake encounter on December 23, 2023. The victims, apprehended on suspicion of being ULFA-I cadres, allege they were shot in the legs after being taken to Hahkhati forest. The Supreme Court, in response to an affidavit filed by the victims, has announced plans to form a Commission to investigate the alleged fake encounters in Assam, intensifying scrutiny of police conduct in the state.
