Assam Struggles with Tap Water Supply, While Other Northeast States Excel under Jal Jeevan Mission

Assam lags behind most Northeast states in providing tap water to rural households under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), with only Manipur trailing behind. While Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have achieved 100% coverage, states like Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, and Meghalaya are ahead of Assam. Assam has reached 81.32% of its target, with work ongoing in 11,759 villages and 376 villages yet to start. The state has spent over Rs 27 crore on the initiative.

As India celebrates its 76th Republic Day, the Jal Jeevan Mission’s impact on rural areas is notable, with 178 “water warriors” honored, including 10 from Assam. Success stories from villages like Upahupara and Chetia Katoni, where the introduction of tap water has improved health, economic activity, and quality of life, highlight the mission’s transformative role.
