Assam to Recognize Buffalo Fighting as Traditional Sport
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government will introduce a law to officially recognize buffalo fighting (Moh Juj) as a traditional sport in Assam. The legislation aims to preserve the state’s cultural heritage and allow annual celebrations.
The announcement follows a Supreme Court petition against Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah for allegedly encouraging a buffalo fight during Magh Bihu in Sivasagar, violating the court’s ban on animal fights. RTI activist Dilip Nath filed the petition, submitting video evidence.
Legal experts suggest Assam could follow states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, which enacted laws to protect traditional animal sports.
