Assam Transport Department Pushes Vehicle Scrapping Drive to Curb Pollution

To move towards a pollution-free Assam, the Transport Department has intensified efforts to scrap end-of-life and polluting vehicles across the state. The department has urged vehicle owners and institutions to remove abandoned and unfit vehicles lying in public and private spaces to protect the environment.

Special Duty Officer (Transport) Gautam Das said the government is offering major financial relief under the Assam Vehicle Scrapping Policy, 2022. Owners can scrap unfit vehicles by paying only 25% of outstanding dues, with up to 75% tax waiver. The One Time Settlement scheme has been extended till March next year, allowing registration cancellation of unfit vehicles by March 31.

The department warned that vehicles remain active in official records until registration is cancelled, leading to continued tax and penalty accumulation.
