Assamese Gains Classical Language Status

Assamese has been granted classical language status by the Union Cabinet, joining Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali. This elevates the count of classical Indian languages to 11. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to PM Narendra Modi, calling it a proud moment for the state. To qualify, a language must have a history of 1,500-2,000 years and ancient literature. PM Modi emphasized the importance of preserving regional languages and promoting India’s cultural heritage.
