Assam’s Hailakandi Jolted by 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Amid Severe Flooding

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Hailakandi in Assam at 2:42 a.m. on Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake’s coordinates were 24.43 N latitude and 92.62 E longitude, with a depth of 25 km. No damage has been reported so far. Concurrently, incessant rainfall has caused severe flooding in Hailakandi, affecting over 5,000 people. Last month, two earthquakes of magnitudes 4.5 and 3.2 hit Manipur and Assam respectively, with no reported casualties or property damage. Another 3.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Goalpara, Assam, in June. The northeastern region remains one of the most earthquake-prone areas globally.
