Barter System Draws Crowds on Day Two of Jonbeel Mela

The centuries-old Jonbeel Mela entered its second day on Friday with the traditional barter system taking centre stage, attracting thousands of visitors near Jagiroad in Morigaon district. People from Karbi Anglong, Meghalaya, and the plains exchanged agricultural produce, forest goods, and traditional food items without using money.
The fair witnessed strong public participation, highlighting Assam’s enduring cultural and economic traditions. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Jonbeel Mela as a symbol of unity and cultural harmony, while officials reiterated continued government support to preserve the historic festival and promote cultural tourism.
