Centre Receives Assam’s Proposal for ST Status to Six Communities

The Centre has received Assam’s recommendation to grant ST status to Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, Koch Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes. Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey stated in Lok Sabha that proposals must be approved by the Registrar General of India and NCST before any legislative amendments. While the ST status remains undecided, Assam has set up autonomous and development councils for these communities. Special reservations in education and 200 Model Tea Estate High Schools have been introduced, with 116 schools already functional since 2023.
